07 What is the Gospel?

All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” is what Jesus said after His resurrection from the dead in Matthew 28.  Subsequently in Revelation 21 Jesus promised: Behold, I make all things new … He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.”

John 3:36 says: He that believes on the Son has life eternal; and he that is not subject to the Son Shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” KJV M.T.

If you are willing to believe the Gospel in its entirety, please start by reading through the Gospel of John found in the New Testament, which is a clear revelation of Jesus Christ.

If you are willing to obey the Gospel and make Jesus Lord of your life please find a Reformed Church and add your name to its book of members.  Becoming a member of a church is symbolic of having your name written in the Book of Life, Revelation 3:5; 21:27.

WHAT IS THE GOSPEL?

The Gospel is found throughout the Bible, but the clearest

presentation of it in any book is found by reading through the book of John.

  1. Man made in the image of God wishes to live separated from God:

John 3:20 says “For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.”  Man hates God.

John 8:34-36 says “… Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin … If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed”    NKJV  Man has bound himself to sin.

Ephesians 2:1-6a says “…we were dead in trespasses, made us alive with Christ…”  Man needs a spiritual resurrection from sin.

Romans 1:18ff “…men, … hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; …” Man hides in sin.

The fallen nature of man is evident in that we cannot and do not wish to follow the 1st Commandment, which is to love God with all your heart, mind, and soul.  God is love and love should be God, it cannot be subjective if there is to be love at all.  God is also hate, God hated sin so much He sent His Son to die on the cross to pay a penalty for and atone for the sin of His people. John 10:1 says: “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”

The original sin in Adam was that man thought he should be like God and should walk away from the Lordship of Christ to love and hate other things.  Today we are born separated from God, and our pleasure is to follow the path away from the kingdom of God to idols, to live as lords in our world.  Man wishes to please the devil, to gratify himself in his own earthly desires and remain separated as enemies of God, Ephesians 2.  On the contrary, Christ’s passion was to always do those things which always please His Father.

2a.      Jesus saves His sheep.

Jesus in John 10 calls His sheep to follow Him, and they who do are His sheep.  In effect they have been resurrected spiritually to know Him as Lord and Savior as they believe on Him.

John 8:31,32:   “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, if ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” .   True faith that comes from God continues.  The faith that God gives comes through the Holy Spirit and makes Jesus Lord of all in the new creation that brings forth good fruit, John 15:1-7; Luke 8:11-15.

Revelation 21:5 “And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new …  He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.”

Revelation 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”

Romans 11:32, 35 says: “For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all. … who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?”   God does the saving, faith is the work of God, John 6:29.”  Ask Jesus to save you.

2b.      Beware of the false Gospel:

If someone says they have faith, but have no works saying salvation is separate from sanctification separate from the works that comes with making Jesus Lord of all they are talking about a man-made faith which cannot save.  The faith that God gives to His elect sheep is never alone because faith, works, sanctification, and glorification at the judgment are only imparted together as the work of God.  This does not mean that your works save you (Romans 9:32), but rather that those who are of Christ sheep follow the Shepherd, John 10:27.  You cannot have saving faith without also having a union with God resulting in ongoing Godly works.

Titus 1:16 says: “They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Jude 4 says:  “For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.  I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.  How did they not believe?, they proved they did not believe because they could not obey.  See Numbers 14.

Romans 8:30 says: “Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.”.  See also 1 John 2:3,4 and 1 John 3:22,24

2c.   At the Last day there will be a judgment that has to do with works (Rev. 20:11-15).

Those in Christ are evident as having entered a new creation that is receiving Christ’s righteousness.  Those that are saved have been saved, and are now being saved, and one day will forever be saved and separated from sin to God at the resurrection.  It is both a process and a reality.

Acts 17:30, 31 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: 31Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

John 15:1-7: I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.  Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

Luke 8:11-15: Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.  15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
